Prayerbook Hebrew with Janis Levy
Monday, February 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
This class is for those of you with some exposure to the Hebrew alphabet, whether recently or in your childhood, who do not necessarily read out loud smoothly or have comprehension of the text. All consonants and vowels will be reviewed, as well as the rudiments of the structure of the language and some core vocabulary for Shabbat evening and morning services. In addition, we will become familiar with Kol Haneshama, the prayer book that we use primarily at the JCA. The hope of this class is that you will become much more comfortable with participating in community prayer services and with Jewish rituals at home. For our basic text, we will use Aleph Isn’t Tough: An Introduction to Hebrew for Adults, Book 1 by Linda Motzkin (URJ Press , 2000; ISBN 978 – 0807407264), available for purchase from several online bookstores. It will be supplemented by handouts as appropriate and use of the prayer book as needed.
