Camp Shemesh, located at Hampshire College, is a Jewish day camp for kids entering grades one through six. We nurture a culture of environmental stewardship, leadership and self-expression through arts, sports, gardening, field trips, music and more! Camp runs from July 1 through August 2 (no camp on July 4), with staff training held June 24-28. Hours are approximately 8 am to 4:30 pm daily. Staff members are selected for their experience working with children, their leadership capabilities, their unique talents, and their enthusiasm for providing a fun and meaningful Jewish summer camp experience.
Head Counselors (Unit Heads)
You will be in charge of a particular age group for the entire summer as part of a team that includes you, Specialists, and Junior Counselors/CITs. Teams are the primary caregivers for each camper, and guide campers in their personal growth and development. Unit Heads are responsible for planning and coordinating non-specialist activities for your unit throughout each camp day and are expected to be positive role models for campers and other staff. You will also provide support and feedback to Junior Counselors, and attend daily staff meetings. Unit Heads must be available for the entire camp season.
You are someone with a passion for a specific area and a background in working with children! Whether it is art, gardening, sports, or nature-related activities, you will be responsible for planning and leading activities that will work for all of the different age groups. You will help the camp coordinate session-long projects as well as smaller, daily activities that help campers grow and learn new skills and safely step outside of their comfort zones. You are expected to be positive role models for campers and other staff. You will also provide support and feedback to Junior Counselors, and attend daily staff meetings. Specialists must be available for the entire camp season.
Junior Counselors (rising 10-12 graders)
You will work collaboratively with, and support, Unit Heads & Specialists as part of a Shemesh counselor team. Teams are the primary caregivers for each camper, and guide campers in their personal growth and development. Junior counselors are also responsible for assisting with planning, coordinating, and teaching camp activities. Junior Counselors must be available for the entire camp season.
CITs (10th grade)
Teens entering 10th grade are invited to participate in our CIT program and begin the process of learning to be leaders and counselors. CITs have mentoring meetings and training sessions with the Camp Director, and have the opportunity to carry out an interest-based project. They develop their skills leading activities, addressing challenging camper behavior and learning about camp systems and protocols.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with a variety of ages in formal or informal settings
After Care Counselors
This is a new option this summer at Camp Shemesh. After Care Counselors will provide care for a small group of mixed age campers. Hours are 2:30 to 5 pm.
